After five years of mounting pressure, the National-led Government has coughed up $9.5 million for child poverty. The post-Budget targeted fund will be spread over five years and will contribute toward part of the logistical costs of a breakfast-in-schools programme – organised by agriculture giant Fonterra and cereal manufacturer Sanitarium.
But there is significant controversy with many saying the government’s contribution is better than nothing but falls short by hundreds of millions of dollars that is needed to help provide breakfasts for this country’s hungry kids.
